Lihaaf is the Urdu word for quilt. This project focuses on the agency of women in their homes. The project brought together a group of 20 women, and encouraged them to engage in an activity where they exchanged stories from their personal lives and eventually expressed them creatively – as drawings, photographs, poetry, embroidery etc. These individual artworks were collected and quilted together along with drawings in a secured environment of a home, where they could break social and hierarchal barriers to engage in music, poetry and jokes.
In its first phase, the project was carried out in the city of Najibabad, a city of known for Rafugari, or the craft of darning. The second phase of the project will be held at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in New Delhi on 5.11.2020 as a daylong YouTube live where one can see the scroll that was created during the collaboration.
