M3 Logo ©goetheinstitut CONCEPT:
As a part of the project M3 - Man, Male, Masculine focusing on current visions on masculinities across the gender spectrum through various cultural and educational activities, emerging music artistes are welcome to present their creative talents and participate in M3-Song Challenge on the theme of Masculinity.

The source of inspiration for this song challenge is the iconic German song titled Männer by Herbert Grönemeyer, asking
What makes a man a man?

This song has been sung widely in German parties since its release in 1984.
‘Men buy women, rough on the outside, soft on the inside’ doesn't seem to be from another era, but still resonates even today.

CURTAIN-RAISER

As a curtain-raiser to this M3-Song Challenge, the Goethe-Institut has translated the original German song into Tamil and also adapted the tune to create a Tamil version that is closest to the German original. This Tamil Cover-song of the German original has been composed and rendered by playback singer Anand Aravindakshan.

MÄNNER-TAMIL – COVER SONG (WATCH IT HERE)

This Tamil-cover song of the original German shall be a source of inspiration for the contestants to create their own versions, in English or in any Indian language, and in turn, this would help to get the conversation on masculinities going on amongst the youngsters in India.

Herbert Groenemeyer © SWR.de Herbert Grönemeyer is a singular figure – an artist unique in the German music scene. Born IN 1956 this singer, musician, producer, composer and actor is popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. His artistic career began in the theater world; while he was still at school, he composed music for Bochum’s Schauspielhaus theater. He became known to a broader audience in 1981 with his first film role, in Das Boot, Wolfgang Petersen’s international hit about the Nazi submarine war.

Grönemeyer might have had an illustrious career as an actor, but he declined to follow that path – his true love is music. His 5th album 4630 Bochum (1984) and his 11th album Mensch (2002) are the third and first best-selling records in Germany respectively, making Grönemeyer the most successful artist in Germany with combined album sales over 13 million.
For almost four decades now, Herbert Grönemeyer has been among the country’s most formative pop artists. But he shows no signs of exhaustion, of weariness, and most certainly none of stagnation. His musical curiosity is as boundless as his political commitment is indefatigable.

Anand Aravindakshan ©Anand Anand Aravindakshan hails from a family of musicians of which his father Aravindakshan is a renowned carnatic musician in the field of Bharatanatyam. He started his training in Indian classical music at the age of 6 from renowned carnatic music stalwart Acharya Seetha Rajan.
At the crossroads of choosing a career in the financial background, being a commerce graduate and going mainstream into playback singing, he decided to participate in reality shows, to give himself a reality check of how good or bad he is.

After winning many such shows came the crown of all, which was his winning in the Tamil Reality show ‘Super Singer’, South India’s biggest reality show giving him the much-needed recognition opening the doors to playback singing in the film industry. He went on to sing for many films and has an array of hits to his name.

Anand has concerted extensively around the globe to Malaysia, London, Dublin, Dubai, U.S.A, Australia and New Zealand, to name a few and has had the privilege to share the stage alongside many music legends.
Apart from being a musician, Anand is also a well-trained Sound Engineer.
