The first edition of Nabanna Art and Craft Fair and Nabanna Earth Weekend (NEW) will be at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata on Saturday, January 21st, 2023. The Nabanna Festival in Santiniketan will take place from 3rd to 13th March.

Nabanna Earth Weekend (NEW), is the literary festival section of Nabanna which started in 2019. The festival is a platform for arts and ideas. It is free, open-access, non-profit and bilingual.  Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata has been associated with NEW since 2022.

Nabanna was initiated by Ms Shanta Ghosh, Managing Trustee, SAMT, in 2006. It is held annually around Basanta Utsav/ Holi at Geetanjali Cultural Complex, Santiniketan. It provides a platform for craftspersons all over India to sell their wares and interact directly with their end buyers. It also organises workshops for artisans and students, art activity for children, a literary festival, a medical camp and cultural programmes.

The Kolkata Edition of Nabanna will have artisanal display, workshop and performance by children of Mongrace Montessori House, Short Street and New Town, documentary film screening, discussion and talks and a musical gig.

We are the World – presented by children from Mongrace school - creating posters recycled items. Theme: Low carbon footprint/recycling/global warming.

Documentary film screening - Taste The Waste - Writer/Director - Valentin Thurn, Germany, 2011.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Fashion Wise: responsible fashion choices. Aloke Singh on the toxicity of Fast Fashion, Amitra Sudan Saha on handloom as an alternative, Preeta Ghosal of Wear Equal on sustainable options linked to women’s empowerment. Moderator: Paramita Saha​​​​​​​.

5:15 pm - 6:00 pm
Eat Smart: The Amar Khaamar story. A presentation on reviving organic farming, followed by a discussion with Sienna on the bazaar to table initiative. Participants: Sujoy Chatterjee, Amar Khamar and Sienna chef(s).​​​​​​​

6:15 pm - 7:15 pm
The Handcrafted Lifestyle: Craft as part of contemporary lifestyles. Swarup Dutta, Christophe Pais of Terra Indica and crafts expert Nandita Palchoudhri. Moderator: Karuna Ezara Parikh​​​​​​​.

7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Concert: Dolinman x Prajna x Abhijit. Presented by Sienna Store and Cafe​​​​​​​.
