Professional Development Workshop
Although language is primarily communicated through sound, phonetics rarely takes center stage in the German classroom. In this professional development workshop, teachers of German will reflect upon the fact why phonetics is attributed a marginal role in teaching German and develop strategies on how to successfully include pronunciation training in their curricula.
First, we will discuss the phonetic inventory of the German language, paying special attention to particularly difficult sounds such as „r“, „ch“ or the Umlaute. Workshop participants will familiarize themselves with several approaches to teaching pronunciation- inductive approaches included.
Second, we will learn how to successfully include new technologies to enhance learner experience.
Finally, participants will discuss the various resources available on the web and from the publishing houses, as well as receive materials to use in class.
