Ankersentrum (surviving in the ruinous ruin)? Curator Franciska Zólyom and composer Elnaz Seyedi will offer insight into the project and the collaborative process involved in creating the installation of
Ankersentrum for the Venice Biennale and the sound composition
tribute to whistle.
The audio work is the center piece of the installation and incorporates the compositions of six musicians. Each contribution uses the piercing tone of a whistle as the main musical instrument and draws inspiration from its function as a tool for communication and self-defense. In Venice, the sound composition was played through loudspeakers that were part of a high and intricate scaffolding structure; at the Goethe Pop Up,
tribute to whistle can be experienced individually as an audio station via headphones.
The conversation will be moderated by Kansas City artist and professor, Caitlin Horsmon, and will take place live on Zoom on Thursday, June 17th at 12:00 pm CDT. Registration is required — please use the link to register.

About Franciska Zólyom
Art historian and curator Franciska Zólyom has been the director of the GfZK – Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig since 2012. The GfZK works with artists and experts (of everyday life) to address pressing contemporary questions and concerns: How do we perceive our environment and how do we inform it? What does it mean to live together in a self-determined and respectful way? Many curatorial projects by Franciska Zólyom explore these very questions, including
Little Warsaw: The Battle of the Inner Truth, Experimental Jetset: Provo Station, or
Natascha Süder Happelmann: Ankersentrum.

About Elnaz Seyedi
Elnaz Seyedi was born in Tehran in 1982 and studied composition at Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Hochschule für Musik in Basel, and at Folkwang University of Arts in Essen. She has received several prestigious awards and scholarships, among them in 2017 Bernd-Alois-Zimmermann-Scholarship of the City Cologne. In 2018-19 she was Composer in Residence at the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in Frankfurt am Main. Her music has been performed at numerous festivals, including the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Venice Art Biennale, Ultraschall Berlin and Zeiträume – Biennale for Contemporary Music and Architecture Basel, and many more. For the project
Ankersentrum she worked together with Natascha Sadr Haghighian and five other composers on the electronic sound installation
tribute to whistle.

About Caitlin Horsmon
Cailtin Horsmon is an artist, curator, and Associate Professor of Film & Media Arts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She directed the artist-run space Plug Projects and is a founder of Stray Cat Microcinema. Grounded in the moving image but integrating installation, sound, sculpture, collaborations, curatorial work, and community programming, her work investigates the obscure and overlooked landscapes of the everyday. It has been exhibited around the world receiving numerous awards and grants.
