Lost, found, made: Three recent German films take us inside the most intimate social unit we know —the (chosen) family as refuge and battlefield, north star or source of drift.   
 
This year’s hit comedy drama and multiple German Film Award winner Oh, This Unspeakable Void, from the producers of Toni Erdmann and director Simon Verhoeven, gathers an A-list cast around a student who moves in with his eccentric grandparents, as he tries to find his place in the world. 
 
Cannes Caméra d’or winner Claire Burger’s queer tragicomedy Foreign Language from the Berlinale competition 2024, starring Nina Hoss and Chiara Mastroianni, brings together a German and a French exchange student as they battle their own and their parents’ ghosts.  
 
A Berlin academic confronts the cost of the freedom she's chosen in another Berlinale premiere; Talking About the Weather, the acclaimed first film by Annika Pinske, stars Anne Schäfer with Sandra Hüller in support. Clara is trying to detach herself from her provincial working-class East German upbringing, and a visit home for her mother’s birthday becomes a crucible for her life choices and idea of self. 
 
Family is the first story we are told about ourselves, the story we spend our lives rewriting.
