Counter Monuments and Para-Monuments Memory Politics in Public Space

The philosopher Jacques Rancière formulates the impossible task of memory work: ‘What is can never be justified by what was, no matter what conclusions we draw about the past."
Taking this as a starting point the lecture examines monuments and focuses primarily on artistic counter-monuments and para-monuments from the 1980s to the present day. We will encounter counter-monumental strategies that challenge the monumental as a discourse, as a form and as a relation to the viewer. Etymologically, the term monument contains the Latin word monere (to remind, to urge, to warn, to refer to). This refers to the past on the one hand and to the future on the other. Monuments are therefore manifestations that allow to ask what has happened and what it means for us today. But if we take Rancière seriously we would have to ask further: What would be a monument that refuses to justifie what is? Perhaps one that confronts the contested nature of history… Behind this background we will ask what it could mean to activate remembrance in the context of contemporary discussions, disputes, and counter-narratives.
Dr. Nora Sternfeld ist Kunstpädagogin und Kuratorin. Sie ist Professorin für Kunstpädagogik an der HFBK Hamburg.
Von 2018 bis 2020 war sie documenta-Professorin an der Kunsthochschule Kassel. Von 2012 bis 2018 war sie Professorin für Kuratieren und Vermitteln von Kunst an der Aalto-Universität in Helsinki. Darüber hinaus ist sie Co-Direktorin des /ecm – Studienprogramms für Ausstellungstheorie und -praxis an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, Mitbegründerin und Teil von trafo.K, Büro für Bildung, Kunst und kritische Wissensproduktion (Wien), seit 2022 von INGLAM – Inglourious Art Mediators – einer Band für Vortragsperformances (Hamburg) und seit 2011 von freethought, Plattform für Forschung, Bildung und Produktion (London). Sie veröffentlicht zu zeitgenössischer Kunst, Bildungstheorie, Ausstellungen, historischer Politik und Antirassismus.
