Prochaska’s adaptation of Thomas Willmann’s best-selling novel brings the conventions of the best American vengeance Westerns to an entirely new setting.
In the late nineteenth century, a small and secluded alpine village harbors dark secrets. At the onset of winter, a stranger named Greider (Sam Riley) arrives in the isolated valley on horseback, carrying a camera, with which he wishes to photograph the valley and its people.
Greider is met with distrust by the villagers who are led by the sons of Old Brenner, the brutal patriarch who holds the entire community under his threatening, violent ways. With a bag of gold coins, Greider buys temporary lodging and he soon settles in for the bleak winter. Before long, the villagers suspect that the stranger has motives beyond photographing the valley.
A series of mysterious and increasingly brutal deaths exposes a terrible tradition that keeps the villagers under Old Brenner’s control, as well as Greider’s connection to this remote valley.
