Producer Jakob Lewis was born in a military hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. At the time, his dad was stationed at a U.S. army base in Wölfersheim, a nearby village. Jakob grew up hearing stories about his parents’ time in Germany during their early 20s, but Jakob doesn’t remember any of it – he left when he was six months old and he hasn’t been back since. For this episode, Jakob and his wife, Catherine, set out on a journey to retrace his parents’ footsteps. What they didn’t realize was just how closely their journeys would be linked – like Jakob’s mother three decades earlier, Catherine is pregnant with the couple’s first child.

On the surface, not much has changed in Wölfersheim since 1986. The apartment that Jakob’s parents once occupied is still there, with the same balcony and the same gray sky overhead. However, the young newlyweds that once resided there have grown up – and so has their son.

During his visit, Jakob explores his past – meeting up with an old neighbor, taking the train around town, and stopping by the courthouse. All the while, Jakob and his wife look toward the future – speculating on their new role as first-time parents.
