Film at Seattle Queer Film Festival documents life of Berlin’s legendary bouncer

Now celebrating 24 years, Seattle Queer Film Festival has grown into the largest event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest! The festival showcases the latest and greatest in queer film, and provides a social hotspot for the LGBTQ community. Goethe Pop Up Seattle is proud to be partnering with SQFF to present the Northwest premiere of the German documentary “Beauty & Decay”.

Sven Marquardt is best known as a heavily tattooed and pierced queer bouncer at Berlin’s most famous and debaucherous techno club, Berghain. He is also an accomplished photographer and sensitive soul. In Annekatrin Hendel’s fascinating documentary, Marquardt reunites with Dominique Hollenstein and Robert Paris, two old friends from the East Berlin underground of the 1980s. Marquardt reflects on his career in preparation for a new photo shoot and gallery showing that he is undertaking with his long-time model/muse Dominique. Through archival images of the queer punk scene in East Berlin and others of today’s city taken by both Marquardt and Paris (a photographer in his own right), the three discuss their experiences of art and life before the Wall came down, when they considered themselves as free as birds—though they were not allowed to leave the country.
