Based on the memoirs of the comedian Hape Kerkeling, whose childhood in the Ruhr Valley was shaped by coal dust and the carnival season, the story is funny, sad, and warm all in one. Hans-Peter (later nicknamed Hape) realizes early on that he has the gift of making others laugh—the only spirits he cannot lift, try as he might, are those of his mother who suffers from depression.

At the German Film Awards, the film received, among other awards, the Lola (bronze) for Best Feature Film. The film was also a hit in Seattle. At this year’s Seattle Film Festival, Julius Weckauf won best actor for his performance. Weckauf joins us for a Q&A after the screening where he will also be presented with the award.

This event is part of the Film Festival “…and the winners are…” - a joint project by the Goethe-Institut and the German Film Academy. In Seattle, the series takes place in the frame of the Year of German-American Friendship and is co-organized by the Goethe Pop Up Seattle with local partners NWFF and SIFF.
