The daily lives of Ayman (12) and Osama (13) are filled with Koran studies, combat training and military discipline. The two Syrian brothers are expected to become Islamic jihadists. At least that’s what their father wants, whose biggest dream is to establish a caliphate.

Filmmaker Talal Derki returned to his native Syria for filming. He pretends to be a follower of the Salafists and accompanies the everyday lives of the family over a period of two years. This creates unique and very emotional insights into an otherwise hermetically sealed world.

Our guest Anne Fabini was awarded the Lola for best editing (Of Fathers and Sons). The documentary was not only nominated for an Academy Award, but also received a Lola for Best Documentary of the Year. Fabini will talk about some of the challenges when editing a full-length documentary.

Anne Fabini will also give an editing workshop on October 20 at 1pm. For more details please click here.

This event is part of the Film Festival “…and the winners are…” - a joint project by the Goethe-Institut and the German Film Academy. In Seattle, the series takes place in the frame of the Year of German-American Friendship and is co-organized by the Goethe Pop Up Seattle with local partners NWFF and SIFF.
