Urban Places – Public Spaces
How do private investors shape the city? How can citizens collectively reclaim public space? Are artistic interventions in the city effective and sustainable? Experts and residents from Munich, Madrid, and New York are connected via live video conference to discuss these and related questions. In New York, Mitchell Joachim, Associate Professor at NYU and Director of Research at Terreform, a non-profit design group that promotes smart design in cities, is in conversation with Detroit-based urban designer Mitch McEwen, Principal of McEwen Studio and founder of the non-profit organization SUPERFRONT that promotes contemporary architecture for an interdisciplinary world. Joachim and McEwen will discuss the recent transformation of the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a sustainable industrial park and how residential vacancy in Detroit can be converted into an opportunity to support local cultural assets.
"Urban Places – Public Spaces" is held as a three-part series from February to April 2015 in the Münchner Kammerspiele. The educational TV channel ARD-alpha will record and broadcast the events.
Dr. Mitchell Joachim is Co-Founder of Terreform ONE and Associate Professor at NYU. He was formerly an architect at Gehry Partners, and Pei Cobb Freed. He is a TED Senior Fellow and has been awarded fellowships with Moshe Safdie and Martin Society for Sustainability, MIT. He was chosen by
Wired magazine for "The Smart List: 15 People the Next President Should Listen To" and
Rolling Stone magazine honored him in "The 100 People Who Are Changing America". Mitchell won many awards including, AIA New York Urban Design Merit Award, Victor Papanek Social Design Award, Zumtobel Group Award for Sustainability and Humanity, History Channel Infiniti Award for City of the Future, and
Time Magazine Best Invention with MIT Smart Cities Car. He co-authored the books
Super Cells: Building with Biology and
Global Design: Elsewhere Envisioned. His work has been exhibited at MoMA and the Venice Biennale. Mitchell earned a Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MAUD from Harvard University, and M.Arch from Columbia University.
Mitch McEwen, Principal of McEwen Studio and co-founder of SUPERFRONT, holds an M.Arch from Columbia University and BA from Harvard in Social Studies. Before founding McEwen Studio, she worked at Bernard Tschumi Architects and New York City Department of City Planning. She has received numerous awards, including a 2013 Architecture Fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany, the New York State Council on the Arts Independent Projects award for Architecture, Planning and Design in 2010, and the Geographic Information Systems Fellowship at Columbia University’s Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy in 2005. She taught as Charles Moore Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, where she created the Mumbai Anthropocene project in the Urban Design studio program. Previously, she created the Parametic Zoning Envelope course as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP, and taught as Instructor at NJIT College of Architecture. McEwen served on the jury for UN Habitat’s 2014 Urban Revitalization of Mass Housing competition, as well as the 2011 award jury for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Puerto Rico.
