The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung–New York Office presents Rosa Luxemburg: A Thousand More Things, an exhibition about their namesake, the socialist thinker and activist Rosa Luxemburg, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her death. The show offers a full portrait of a complex persona, who was both a talented political theorist and an avid collector of plants.

Between 1913 and 1918, including her years in prisons in Berlin, Wronke, and Breslau, Rosa Luxemburg produced a herbarium—an annotated collection of plant specimens—spanning 17 notebooks. The pages, pastings, and notes of the herbarium demonstrate her way of engaging the world, with care and attention for its small, seemingly insignificant aspects.

The exhibition shows how Rosa Luxemburg’s political work and her practice of collecting inform each other, how her humanity is inextricably tied to her love for nature, and how her gentleness toward all living things reflects back on her notion of radical social change. In addition to Rosa Luxemburg’s stunning botanical collection, the exhibition features historical materials and a sound installation.

Rosa Luxemburg: A Thousand More Things is organized by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung–New York Office in collaboration with Goethe-Institut New York.
