Marlene Dietrich-Program

As part of the Year of German-American Friendship we invite everyone to our Pop Up Film Haus to discover German cinema through a curated selection of films. Each film will be shown in German with English subtitles and there will be an opportunity for discussion following each screening.

This week at the Pop Up Film Haus and as part of the Marlene Dietrich-program:

The Blue Angel, 1930
Director: Joseph von Sternberg
Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Emil Jannings, Hans Albers

The movie is based on Heinrich Mann’s novel Professor Unrat (or: Small Town Tyrant) and was the breakthrough for Marlene Dietrich. The Blue Angel presents the tragic transformation and moral decline of a respectable professor (played by Emil Jannings) who ends up performing as a cabaret clown after falling in love with Lola, a variety singer (played by Dietrich).

Discussion:
Peter Bali leads a discussion after the film focusing on the life and career of Marlene Dietrich.
