For the first Jazz in the Basement concert of 2019, join Erol Danon (piano), Francisco Quintero (guitar), Keith Butler (drums), and Stephen Arnold (bass) for an afternoon of creative new works. Jazz in the Basement is a monthly concert series featuring local artists, coordinated with the assistance of volunteers Bertrand Uberall and John Cook. The concerts are intended to highlight young artists, new composers, or unique jazz sounds to broaden the listening landscape of our Washington, D.C. audiences. D.C. Public Library is a proud supporter of our local music community and looks forward to expanding valuable resources to assist musicians in their creative and professional endeavors.

Erol Danon is a pianist that strives to mix the be-bop tradition with a playful creativity that moves the music forward. He began playing piano at the age of 4, and first developed his love for jazz and improvised music when he was 11. Born and raised in New York City, he attended college at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Since moving to the D.C. area in 2016, Erol has been a fixture on the jazz scene. He has contributed to the D.C. community as a member of several projects that perform original music, including The New World, The Worst Generation Orchestra, and Sea-Change.

Guitarist Francisco Quintero has been a part the international jazz scene in major U.S. cities such as Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C and New York City, South America, and Europe. He has shared the stage with artists such as Andres Briceno, Victor Provost, Pablo Gil, Paul Carr, Herman Burney Jr., Camille Thurman, Carl Allen, Derrick Gardner, Tim Warfield, Peter Bernstein, Ari Brown, Geof Bradfield, Reggie Thomas, Fareed Haque, Gustavo Caruci, Andy Narell, and many more. Both as an improviser and composer, Francisco's style is rooted in the history of the music, permeated with authenticity, and always nodding at the perpetual motion of jazz to come.

Keith Butler, a Winston-Salem, N.C. native, is a drummer motivated by the tradition and future of the drum set. He graduated in 2011 with a degree in Parks and Recreation Management from The University of North Carolina Wilmington, and studied privately with Thomas Taylor and Michael D'Angelo during his time there. He has performed extensively, and recorded several albums/projects with each group. In D.C. Keith is a member of several jazz groups, leads his own trio, and works regularly as a sideman for area jazz musicians. With influences such as Art Taylor, Joe Chambers, Tony Reedus, and Billy Higgins, he seeks to support the band in any style.

Stephen Arnold is a bassist and composer living in Washington, D.C. from Greenfield, Massachusetts. He moved to Washington in 2013 to attend The George Washington University, where he double-majored in Music and English. It was also at GW where Stephen discovered his love of jazz and the upright bass, under the mentorship of the very generous GW jazz professors – especially the bass instructor, Herman Burney, Jr. Since graduating in 2017, Stephen has become a mainstay of the D.C. jazz scene, having performed with many of the city’s top bandleaders, including Donvonte McCoy, Thad Wilson, Sarah Hughes, Elijah Balbed, Aaron Myers, Samuel Prather, Victor Provost, Alison Crockett, and more.
