As a part of the Goethe-Institut North America’s "Queer as German Folk" series – in which we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Uprising as a milestone in the fight for gender diversity and equality – the Goethe-Institut Washington and its many local project partners have selected a number of culturally- and historically-significant films from Germany and North America, highlighting various aspects of queer rights movements. We present Kino-Q, a film series that guides viewers through parts of this history, paired with expert-led discussions.

TransMilitary

United States, 2018, 93 min., documentary in English.

Directed by Gabriel Silverman and Fiona Dawson.

TransMilitary follows the Emmy™-nominated short film Transgender, at War and in Love. Around 15,500 transgender people serve in the U.S. military (notably the largest transgender employer in the U.S.), where they must conceal their gender identity because military policies ban their service.

TransMilitary chronicles the lives of four individuals (Senior Airman Logan Ireland, Corporal Laila Villanueva, Captain Jennifer Peace & First Lieutenant El Cook) defending their country’s freedom while fighting for their own.

They put their careers and their families’ livelihoods on the line by coming out as transgender to top brass officials in the Pentagon in hopes of attaining the equal right to serve. The ban was lifted in 2016, but with President Trump now trying to reinstate it, their futures hang in the balance again.

Presented as a part of The DC Center for the LGBT Community’s monthly film series, Reel Affirmations XTRA. RA XTRA is presented by Reel Affirmations Film Festival, in order to keep LGBTQ images and life stories on the foreground of the Arts and Culture scene in Washington, DC. On October 24-27, 2019, Reel Affirmations Film Festival annually presents several days of new and exciting international, documentary, short and feature films from all over the world to Washington as well as panel discussions, filmmaker Q&A and celebrations.
