AATG Spring Workshop for German Teachers

Instructor: Dr. Simone Smala This workshop is designed for German teachers seeking to integrate artificial intelligence into their language education methodologies.

In the first part of the workshop, "Next-Gen AI: Harnessing Generative AI for German Teaching," Dr. Smala will cover the basics of Generative AI and Machine Translation, providing an overview of their transformative impact on language teaching. Teachers will learn how to use tools like ChatGPT and machine translation for content creation, assessment, lesson planning, and more.

In the second part, "Exploring the Intersection of AI and German Literature: Redefining German Teaching through ‘Enchantment,’” Dr. Smala will build on the foundational knowledge from Part 1. She delves into the concept of language teaching as a site of enchantment, reconnecting educators with the magical moments that language learning offers. The workshop explores the intersection of AI and German literature, with a focus on E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman." Participants will examine literary representations of androids and connect them to contemporary themes in AI, fostering discussions on the uncanny and eerie sensations in technology.

The workshop encourages teachers to develop engaging student activities that blend traditional language teaching with modern technological tools, emphasizing the unique and human aspects of language education. Participants will leave with insights, resources, and lesson plans to enrich their German teaching practices, offering a German "twist" to the integration of AI in language education.

The workshop takes place from 9AM-2PM (including lunch break) with a subsequent AATG Business Meeting from 2.30PM-4PM.

The workshop will be held in German.
