The Exam sections

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 consists of the sections listening, reading, writing and speaking (oral pair exam). The exam is conducted and graded uniformly worldwide.

Listening

Duration: 30 minutes

You listen to everyday conversations, radio announcements and interviews, news on the telephone and public announcements and work on related tasks.

Reading

Duration: 30 minutes

You read texts such as short newspaper articles, e-mails, ads and public information boards and work on related tasks.

Writing

Duration: 30 minutes

You write messages that relate to your immediate living environment.

Speaking

Duration: 15 minutes

You ask questions and answer them about yourself. You talk about your own life. You also plan and agree on something with the person you are talking to.

By passing the exam, you demonstrate that you ...

  • can understand and use frequently used expressions and sentences in everyday situations;

  • are able to communicate in simple, routine situations when dealing with familiar and common topics such as your own background and education, your immediate environment and needs;

  • are able to extract the essential information from short texts with familiar vocabulary (simple newspaper texts, ads or information boards).

Requirements

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 is a German exam for adults.
The Goethe-Institut exams are generally open to anyone and can be taken regardless of age or nationality.

  • The recommended age for the Goethe-Zertifikat A2 is 16 years or older.

  • The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 requires language skills at the second competence level (A2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

  • To achieve this level, you will need 200 to 350 lessons of 45 minutes each, depending on your previous knowledge and learning requirements.
