As LGBTIQA+ collectives in India work to expand inclusion and reduce discrimination on the ground, we also work to engender change in hearts and minds, a task substantially more challenging than legal reform. One way we do this is by participating in and producing cultures that reflect both the universality and specificity of our experiences.

German Film @ Reel Desires
Neubau (New Building)
Dir.: Johannes Maria Schmit
Duration: 81 min, 2020, Germany
Johannes Maria Schmit's film is based on a screenplay by Tucké Royale, who also takes on the lead role. Royale is a well-known artist in the German queer scene, of which New Building presents an excerpt: the movie follows the trans man Markus during his laid-back everyday life in the Uckermark – jobbing at an ostrich farm, jogging, thinking about sex. His grandmothers Sabine and Alma are also part of his life. Out of love (and not due to a sense of duty), Sabine and Markus take care of Alma, who suffers from dementia. Nevertheless, Markus is lonely. Schmit's delicate film takes a look at loneliness, both in general and Markus's in particular. It looks at the loneliness of life outside the cities, and the loneliness in the east of the republic – which affects many, not only the LGBT community.
