Study Group: Debut Concert
Concert|Percussion ensemble comprising musicians from Kolkata and Chennai
-
Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, Kolkata
This concert marks the debut full-length performance by STUDY GROUP, a newly formed percussion ensemble comprising musicians from Kolkata and Chennai. The group was formed with the initial purpose of investigating the trajectory of the ‘emancipation of percussion’ – a phenomenon in Western art music which began in earnest in the late 1920s, and has had profound implications for the evolution of contemporary musical thought and practice.
The works in this programme – composed between 1939 and 2015 – articulate a network of concerns central to modern music: the parity of all sonic texture from tonal to noisy; the generation of melodic contours and harmonic environments from timbre and phrasing, in addition to pitch; the deployment of spatialisation; and the mysterious properties of silence.
