Day 1
My Name Is Happy
Nick Read, Ayse Toprak | United Kingdom | 2022 | 82 Min. | Turkish with English subtitles
Mutlu Kaya is just 19 when her dream of making it as a singer comes close enough to touch: she is about to enter the finale of the TV show ‘Turkey’s Got Talent’. But then, a man guns down the Kurdish teenager. His motive: Mutlu rejected his marriage proposal. She barely survives and is left with a bullet in her head. After weeks in a coma, Mutlu takes her first tentative steps back into life, supported by her beloved sister Dilek. But five years later, a phone call hits Mutlu harder than anything that has come before: her sister Dilek has been murdered by her fiancé. Mutlu is now fighting not just for her own recovery but for justice for her sister. She is also fighting against the normalisation of violence against women. Ultimately, Mutlu wants to sing again, for Dilek.
PAINTING DHAKA
Lukas Zeilinger | Germany | 2023 | 91 | Original with english subtitles
"Painting Dhaka" takes us into the slums of Bangladesh and asks a question: How do we really see a country known for corruption?
What begins as a film about a graffiti workshop for kids in Dhaka's poor areas turns into a deeper look at Bangladesh's real issue: a rich elite benefiting from the country's poverty. Central to this story is the state-owned Bangladesh Railway.
This movie explores themes of power and feeling powerless, and how to break free from both. It's also a touching story about the amazing impact of art.
Day 2
Fritz Bauers Legacy
Isabel Gathof, Sabine Lamby, Cornelia Partmann | Germany | 2022 | 98 Min. | German, Englisch, Hebrew with English subtitles
In 2020, 93-year-old Bruno D. is found guilty. His crimes took place over 75 years ago: D. was an SS guard at Stutthof concentration camp. Without people like him, without thousands of accomplices, the Nazi regime’s genocidal campaign would not have been possible. As early as 1963, Hessian Attorney General Fritz Bauer launched the first trial in Frankfurt against SS guards from Auschwitz concentration camp. The charge: complicity in murder. But why did no wave of prosecutions follow – despite the extensive evidence? And what do the potentially last trials against Nazi perpetrators mean for the survivors of the Shoah, for the German legal system and for coming to terms with German history?
Between the Rains
Andrew Harrison Brown, Moses Thuranira | Kenya | 2023 | 82 Min. | Swahili with English subtitles
Persistent drought is putting the lands and culture of northern Kenya’s Turkana-Ngaremara people in jeopardy, causing problems with wildlife and increasing tensions between rival tribes. Meanwhile, orphaned shepherd boy Kolei waits impatiently to begin his journey as a traditional warrior. But when he fails the crucial test, he loses the respect of the older warriors and is forced to withdraw from the community, disappointed and isolated. Rain still hasn’t fallen, and the climate crisis poses an imminent threat. When more and more wild animals start preying on his family’s livestock, Kolei is determined to do something about it. And he sees a chance to regain his standing in the community as well.
