In the early 1960s, Turkish guest workers, or ‘Gastarbeiter,’ were recruited by the Federal Republic of Germany to make up for labor shortages in different industries. As Turkish communities developed in Germany, they created their own infrastructure for entertainment and celebration – and with it, a thriving music industry that produced Turkish-German rock, disco, and hip-hop. In this lively documentary, filmmaker Cem Kaya draws on rare archival footage and a dazzling soundtrack to trace the history of Turkish-German music.
