Director: Robert Thalheim, color, 96 min., 2012/13

For years, their roles were simply reversed. Theatre director Konrad took care of the household and raising their two children, while Christine tried to work her way up as an anesthesiologist in a hospital. But that’s about to come to an end now. Konrad has a chance to direct a readaptation of Hebbel’s “Nibelungen”, and an au pair from Argentina is to take care of the kids. But nothing goes as planned, because the old roles have remained in place and only the line-up has changed. Robert Thalheim’s ELTERN is a brilliantly enacted, well-thought out piece, which gives the term “family film” a new meaning.

Robert Thalheim was born in Berlin in 1974. He graduated from high school in Indiana (USA) in 1992, and completed his school leaving examinations in 1995 in Germany. From 1997/98, he worked as assistant director at the Berliner Ensemble. In 1998, he studied at the FU in Berlin and from 2000, he studied Directing at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Thalheim’s second feature film “And Along Come Tourists” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. A year later, the film was nominated for the category of Best Film at the German Film Awards 2008.
