Composer Charles Corey and Seattle Symphony Principal Oboe Mary Lynch join to discuss Together, This Journey, the composition written by Corey in collaboration with clients of Northwest Center and Best Buddies. Lynch, who has worked with the program this season along with fellow musicians, will share her personal experience of her Best Buddies partnership. The conversation will explore how Beethoven challenged the traditional role of the composer and how Together, This Journey challenges the idea of who gets to be a composer today.

Hosted by Seattle Symphony Vice President of Artistic Planning Raff Wilson.

About Charles Corey:

Charles Corey is an American composer holding degrees in Music Composition and Theory from the University of Pittsburgh (Ph.D.) and Montclair State University (M.A., B.Mus.).  Among his teachers are Robert Aldridge, Trevor Björklund, Patrick Burns, Dean Drummond, Eric Moe, Mathew Rosenblum and Amy Williams. His approach to composition exploits and subverts the relationships that exist between different tuning systems; the results of this process range from pieces that use standard tuning systems in unique ways to works that involve multiple tuning systems working in concert.  His compositions are known for their unexpected, evocative harmonies and their strong dramatic arcs.  His music has been played by a variety of performers including Cikada Ensemble, IonSound Project, Iktus Percussion, entelechron, and Relâche, and his writings have been published in several languages.

About Mary Lynch:

Hailed as “the star of the evening” by The Philadelphia Inquirer and praised for her “sweet oboe sound” by The Washington Post, Mary Lynch has been Principal Oboist of the Seattle Symphony since 2014. She began her career as Second Oboist of The Cleveland Orchestra and has performed as a guest with the Chicago and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras, and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Since the start of her tenure in Seattle, she has performed frequently as soloist with the Seattle Symphony. An avid chamber musician, Lynch has spent several summers at the Marlboro Music Festival, has toured with Musicians from Marlboro, and performs regularly with the Newport Music Festival (RI) and the Seattle and Philadelphia Chamber Music Societies. Her chamber music performances have been enthusiastically reviewed and broadcast on radio stations around the U.S., including on American Public Media’s Performance Today.

Lynch earned her BM and MM degrees at New England Conservatory and The Juilliard School respectively, studying with John Ferrillo, Elaine Douvas and Nathan Hughes. She is also a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied with Daniel Stolper. Now a devoted teacher herself, Lynch serves on faculty at the University of Washington.
