US Premiere!
In collaboration with
SIFF and Cologne-based
Rapid Eye Movies, Goethe Pop Up Seattle is thrilled to present the US premiere of the documentary
Freakscene – The Story of Dinosaur Jr. (Germany | 2020 | 82 min. | Phillipp Reichenheim)
© Dinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Jr. was and is arguably the most influential early exponent of the music that would come to be called grunge – and that would make Seattle world-famous – and thus it is only fitting that
Philipp Reichenheim’s definitive, transatlantic documentary on the band would celebrate its American debut in Seattle’s glorious, historic movie palace, the Egyptian Theatre.
Just before Nirvana elevated Grunge to the mainstream, Dinosaur Jr. were the Noise Rock trio of the hour. With a great volume of extraordinary archive material and original interviews,
Freakscene is the story of this US band and how it changed music. It is also the story of the eloquent and eccentric guitarist and bandleader
J. Mascis, the bassist
Lou Barlow, and drummer
Murph, who somehow communicate with one another only through music. One way or another, director Philipp Reichenheim manages to make the closed and shy icons speak, and you will want to hear what they have to say.
This screening will include a
live virtual Q&A with director
Philipp Reichenheim and
J. Mascis, moderated by
Megan Jasper (Sub Pop Records).
