Far from a documentary account of this period of explosive creativity, Roehler’s black comedy (based in part on his own experiences in Berlin in the 1980s) offers a tongue-in-cheek look the avant-garde underground of Berlin of the 1980s.

West Germany, 1980. 19-year-old Robert (Tom Schilling) is bored with the quiet life in the countryside and the self-indulgent hippies at his boarding school.
In an act of spontaneity, he packs up and moves to West-Berlin. An “Island of Creativity,” the walled-in city promises to be a paradise for misfits with its countless bars, thriving subculture and a scene defined by art, sex, drugs and punk rock.
Yet once he arrives, he quickly learns that the city is not quite as glamorous as he had imagined. Robert calls on his old friend Schwarz (Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht), who offers him a job as janitor in his peep show, and introduces him to the Berlin nightlife.
Searching for his true calling, Robert spends his alcohol fueled nights at the infamous "Risiko" club", where he is surrounded by loud music, and legendary figures of the Berlin underground scene like Blixa Bargeld (Alexander Scheer),
As he and Schwarz look for new ways to better their financial situation, a robbery could provide the needed starting capital for their career as drug dealers.
