Starring Europe: New Films From The EU

The STARRING EUROPE: NEW FILMS FROM THE EU Film Festival provides an opportunity for international cinema enthusiasts in Los Angeles to celebrate and discover contemporary films from across the European Union. Spotlighting festival award-winning feature length and short films from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Spain, this 7-day showcase embodies the rich heritage and diversity of cinema from Europe.
 
The festival begins on Tuesday, May 9th, The Day of the European Union, with an Opening Night Red Carpet Reception at the Egyptian. The opening night program includes the Hungarian short film SING, directed by Kristóf Deák, followed by the Latvian feature film MELLOW MUD (ES ESMU SEIT), directed by Renārs Vimba.
 
All ticketholders are invited to a reception in the Egyptian Theatre courtyard begins at 6:00 PM.

MELLOW MUD (ES ESMU SEIT)

Renārs Vimba, Latvia (2016), 106 min. Latvan with English subtitles.
Vimba’s debut feature follows Raja (Elina Vaska), struggling to escape her grueling life and find her mother, who had emigrated to England. An English-language Olympiad may provide the young woman the means to buy a plane ticket to London in this bittersweet coming-of-age tale. Newcomer Vaska was selected as one of the EFP Shooting Stars at the Berlin International Film Festival 2017. “Knockout performance from big-screen debutant Elina Vaska, who conveys her character’s feelings of anger, abandonment, responsibility and first love with conviction and authenticity.” - Alissa Simon, Variety.

Director: Dir. Kristóf Deák, Hungary (2015), 25 min. In Hungarian with English subtitles.

In this year’s Oscar-winning Live-Action Short, two young girls take down a bullying teacher with the power of their friendship. “A parable of defiance against unjust and corrupt authority.” - A.O. Scott, The New York Times.

The festival continues Wednesday, May 10th through Monday, May 15th with a selection of feature, and short film screenings from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain  at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
