Join us for this rare opportunity to experience a pivotal early piece by contemporary artist Tino Sehgal. For two nights, dancer Frank Willens will present (Untitled), 2000, at LACMA, marking Sehgal’s first museum presentation in Los Angeles, and one of the few showings of his work to take place on the West Coast.
Since the early 2000s, Sehgal has been known for pioneering a durational form of live and at times interactive artwork in which his art is presented daily for the length of a given exhibition. The situations that Sehgal facilitates, in which these individuals engage with museum visitors through conversations, singing, or dancing, form the conceptual content of the work.
(Untitled) is Sehgal’s last piece conceived for the stage, before he transitioned to an exhibition-based practice. Approximately 50 minutes long, (Untitled) features a single dancer who chronologically moves through different styles of 20th-century iconic choreography; the work thus functioning somewhat as a museum of 20th century concert dance.
Tino Sehgal: Berlin-based artist Tino Sehgal studied political economy and dance, and was a member of Les Ballets C. de la B. dance company early in his career. He has presented one person exhibitions at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Modern in London, and Palais de Tokyo in Paris, among other institutions. In 2005, he represented Germany at the 55th Venice Biennale, where he was awarded the Golden Lion prize in 2015.
Frank Willens is a Berlin-based dancer, choreographer, and actor. Originally from California, he studied dance at UC Berkeley, performed in Notre Dame de Paris in Las Vegas, and toured with Paul McCartney. He has worked with Meg Stuart, Boris Charmatz, Peter Stamer, Falk Richter, Tino, Sehgal, and Laurent Chétouane, among others. His most recent solo sixty minutes towards being here will be presented at L.A.’s Human Resources on August 15 and 16.
