The Black Box

Animal rights, climate activism, music, and feminism - spiced up with a good dose of drag: that's Soya the Cow.

The alter-ego of the artist and musician Daniel Hellmann, who lives in Zurich and Berlin, blurs the boundaries between male and female, human and cow, and performs a delicate balancing act between humor and a desire to change the world.

After appearing at animal rights and climate protests, in theatres and art festivals, and most recently on The Voice of Germany, the singing drag cow shows up with her cabaret show Dear Human Animals, an evening full of emotional songs, surprising storytelling, and mesmerizing live visuals that will immerse you in Soya’s fascinating bovine universe.

What would our lives look like if we stopped cutting others to pieces? Can we be free if not everyone is free? An intimate, moving, and thought-provoking night that challenges the human self-image as the center of the universe.

About Daniel Hellmann:
Daniel Hellmann
is a singer, performer, and dancer who splits his time between his hometown of Zurich and Berlin. Trained in classical singing and theater / performance, Hellmann took part in several opera productions in Switzerland, Belgium, and Germany before he began developing his own projects as a performer and choreographer in 2012. Hellmann sees his artistic practice as a form of intersectional activism. His projects explore the body, bodily relationships and desire, and question social norms and power relations in the fields of sexuality, human and animal rights.

In addition to his animal activism as Soya the Cow, Hellmann has created several award-winning performances, including Traumboy (2015) on male sex work and its female counterpart Traumgirl (2019) with Anne Welenc. Other artistic collaborations have addressed the current refugee situation in Switzerland (Nach Lampedusa – Wandererfantasien with Ursina Greuel & Samuel Fried / 2014) and triadic love relationships (All In with Layton Lachman & Anne Welenc / 2019). From 2018-2021, Hellmann curated the performing arts for the interdisciplinary gender and sexualities festival LA FÊTE DU SLIP in Lausanne.

Soya the Cow’s US tour “Planet Moo” is made possible with the support of Goethe Pop Up Kansas City alongside the Goethe Pop Ups in Seattle and Houston in partnership with the City of Zurich, Canton of Zurich, and Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council.
