Performing masculinity

Masculinities - its various forms, symbols, habitus – are inherently performed, in public spaces or at home, as everyday routines or as conscious enactments. What readings of “the masculine” are visible, exposed and popular, also reflects what is enacted in cultural spaces such as stages and screens – whereas the stage or screen may serve as the medium for a critical interrogation, a re-writing or also consolidation of dominant practices.

This series on “Performing Masculinities” invites to interrogate the performances of masculinities both in the everyday and on stages and screens.

As a dance practitioner, it has been revelation for me to realize how similar dance training and gender training are to each other. In both these systems, one spends many years training the body to perform a set of actions with conviction and ease. Gender training, though, is a little sneakier.

The phrase toxic masculinity has been having a steady run. Feminism is a lot about the kaleidoscopic power of its questions. From the position of one who critiques the patriarchy one could reflect on the limits of the phrase by asking: what don’t we talk about when we talk about toxic masculinity? But from my point of view as a feminist and an artist I would like to ask another version of that question: what would we talk about if we didn’t just talk about toxic masculinity?
