The Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) continues to maintain its status as a highly regarded film forum in Pune in 2024. Serving primarily as a platform for Marathi-language films, as opposed to the dominant Hindi-centric productions of Bollywood, PIFF also remains a gateway for Pune's cinema enthusiasts to access a diverse range of international films.
In the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, the appetite for international films has increased significantly in recent years. Despite this, contemporary international and German films still face challenges in securing wide distribution through conventional channels in Indian cinemas. Film festivals continue to be one of the few ways to bring German film productions to a wider audience.
With this mission in mind, the Goethe-Institut Pune is committed to curating a well-balanced film package of the latest German feature films. The upcoming PIFF 2024 will present a compelling line-up, including the following German films:
Elaha | 2023 | 110 Minutes | Germany | Director: Milena Aboyan
Synopsis: Elaha, 22, believes she must restore her supposed innocence before she weds. A surgeon could reconstruct her hymen but she cannot afford such an operation. She asks herself: why does she have to be a virgin anyway, and for whom?
Afire (Original title: Roter Himmel) | 2023 | 102 Minutes | Germany | Director: Christian Petzold

Through this unique friendship with the wild animal, his own past as an outcast farmer’s son, which he has always run away from, slowly catches up with him.
