The Ordinaries takes the viewer into a world with its own nature and rules. An essential task in editing film is communicating and making tangible new worlds. The masterclass will help to develop a nuanced understanding about the challenges faced in the editing room, especially for a film's beginning. Building on Kai Eiermann’s experiences with films including The Ordinaries, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of editing and some of the questions that arise during the process. In which direction is ones’ attention directed in the beginning of the film? How does the beginning establish the mode of viewing of the film? But also, how does the beginning of the film relate to its end?

With The Ordinaries as an example, participants of the Masterclass will witness the various stages of editing. By viewing the final film and an earlier version, one can see how an energetic start of the film overwhelmed the viewer and later had to be edited, with various scenes divided and reconfigured to make it more understandable and emotionally accessible.

On invitation only!
