Refunction 2022
 Call for Applications

Refunction is a performance series by Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi inspired by one of the core principles of Bertolt Brecht’s theatre – Umfunktionierung (refunctioning), in which the composition of a new work is in the movement and tension between material, technique and function.

Over the past four years Refunction has supported and hosted six projects by theatre artists and practitioners from across the country. In 2020 Refunction responded to the challenges to performance-making in this present time by reimagining the programme to support work that actively and imaginatively engaged with the question of what it is to produce and present dramatic work digitally.

This year Refunction invites artists and groups to submit proposals for both physical (offline) and digital (online) performance projects. Our programme continues to encourage performers and theatre makers to imagine projects that will explore the movement and tension between material, technique and function. We are excited to support works that challenge and propose rituals, modes and mediums of performance in our present contexts.

  • Applications are open to German and Indian citizens living and working in India.
  • The project may be in any Indian language including English, or German.
  • In case of digital projects, the final work can be recorded and does not necessarily have to be performed or shared with a live audience
  • Proposals for the dissemination or performance of existing physical/digital performances are not eligible. If you are adapting an existing work for another medium please do outline how and why.
  • The work cannot be a film or audio recording of an existing performance by the individual or group
  • The projects must be realised by September 2022. Projects will be assigned performance dates between September and December 2022.
 
Three projects will be selected by an independent jury. Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan will offer the selected projects the following:      
  • A grant of INR 75000 towards the realisation of the project.
  • Hosting of the final performances at Siddhartha Hall, Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi or, in the case of digital work, on the website of the Goethe- Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan alongside any other platforms that the artist chooses.
Note: all application material apart from the script must be submitted in a single PDF file. We cannot accept multiple documents with separate details.
  • Bio of the artist/group and chief collaborators
  • Script or detailed treatment
  • Director/Choreographer’s note on the conceptual framework of the piece, thematic questions and concerns.
  • If you are applying for a digital project - a note on the questions and propositions that you plan to work in imagining this for a digital audience.
  • Details on the proposed team of collaborators (writers, directors, designers and actors/dancers)
  • A broad time-frame for the project.
