Sewing Diversity
In sustainable farming, a diversity block refers to a method of crop diversification which involves planting different varieties of rice or other crops across sections. Akin to a living seed bank, it allows farmers to determine the quality and health of their seeds while also enhancing biodiversity, improving soil conditions, increasing resilience and reducing the risks of crop failure. Sewing Diversity is a participatory embroidery-based installation based on the diversity block concept created using the seed stitch—a type of embroidery that resembles rice grains on canvas. The installation is crafted by the artist along with participants in a mindful stitching workshop, serving as a reminder of the importance of community care, slow food, and the contributions of women’s work.
