“That man changed my life in a single moment,” recalls Ritu. She is one of hundreds of women in India who fall victim to acid attacks each year – most of them acts of violence rooted in personal relationships, often committed by someone within their closest social circle. At the Sheroes Café, Ritu and her fellow survivor Faraha, along with other women, are bringing this issue into the public eye. Each of them has found her own way to confront her fate – and to challenge prevailing notions of beauty: Ritu walks the runway as a showstopper at the Asian Designer Week, while Faraha undergoes facial skin transplantation to soften the traces of the attack. Ayena means mirror – and it is precisely this mirror that the protagonists hold up to society.

Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Pune, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in New Delhi, National Film Archive of India (NFAI-NFDC) and filmmaker Siddhant Sarin, invites you to a special screening of the National Film Award-winning documentary Ayena (Mirror) – a moving portrayal of the lives and resilience of acid attack survivors.
The film received the National Film Award 2022 in the category Best Non-Feature Film and celebrated its world premiere at the Budapest International Documentary Festival (BIDF) 2022 (Main Competition). It was subsequently screened at several prestigious festivals including the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) – Spotlight Section, Liberation Docfest Bangladesh – Cinema of the World, Kino Pavasaris (Vilnius International Film Festival) – Panorama, DOK.fest München – DOK.Horizonte Competition, Krakow Film Festival (Official Selection), DCSAFF: Washington DC South Asian Film Festival (Documentary Competition), Puerto Rico Film Festival (Documentary Competition – Mention of Honor), Docs Without Borders (Documentary Competition – Merit of Excellence), and the EIDF EBS International Documentary Festival (Global Competition).

A panel discussion featuring voices from the field will follow the screening.
