Yana Tsegay investigates how historical and spatial regimes are materialised and experienced through the affective residues of a place. Working with installation, performance, painting and text, she examines architecture, landscapes, monuments and museum displays as sites where historical narratives, cultural myths, and relations of power are continuously produced and negotiated.

Her work is rooted in speculative artistic research. Tsegay translates observations, historical fragments and material traces into painterly and performative environments.

PLEASURE GUARDING, PENALISE PARK by Yana Tsegay is about gardens, guarding and intentional language. It results from a close reading of historical and administrative texts together with spatial research as part of her bangaloREsidency project with 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery.

Ma’am guards this place now. Fences cast of iron and signboards have been put up according to the new regulations. This is a safe place now for the public, a space for healthy recreation and to breathe pure and clean air. This is a beautified garden put up on red soil. Red soil is not to be soiled.
