The German education system is one of the best in the world. Degrees granted by the approximately 350 German universities and colleges are recognized worldwide.

Tuition fees are usually not imposed, as the German government offers academic training programs to its young citizens free of charge. Foreign students who can demonstrate good performance also receive this support and pay no fees. The few private universities (approximately 10%) usually charge tuition fees.

Students with a Burmese school leaving certificate after 11 or 12 years (new system) who studied at a recognized university for at least 2 years can apply to a preparatory course (Studienkolleg). They must prove that they have the necessary knowledge of German (see below) at the beginning of their studies. 

Students with a complete bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in Myanmar can apply directly to a German university. Please find out if your Bachelor qualifies you for direct subject-restricted admission or not.

SAT, GED, IGCSE, Myanmar matriculation exam and IELTS are not valid university entrance qualifications, IELTS could be helpful if you must prove your level of English.

The GCE is accepted in Germany under certain conditions as a direct subject-restricted university entrance qualification. These conditions are defined in the “Evaluation Proposal of the United Kingdom” (in German) and can be found in the anabin database, which is the database of the Central Office for Foreign Education in Germany.

Certificates from recognized institutions that administer examinations in Great Britain (“awarding bodies”) must always be submitted to the accreditation authorities for review. The certificates from the respective schools are not sufficient.

There are 6 test levels of German as a foreign language: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. German universities usually require the successful completion of the C1 exam for admission.

Successful completion of the B1 exam is a prerequisite for admission to a Studienkolleg preparatory course, some Studienkollegs demand B2. The B2 exam is also the minimum requirement for a student visa for Germany. After arriving in Germany, prospective students can prepare for the C1 exam by taking language courses at the university they will be attending, or at private institutions such as the Goethe Instituts in Germany.

However, the Goethe-Institut recommends completion of the B2 exam in Myanmar before leaving for Germany. This eases entry into life in Germany and above all, costs much less than courses in Germany. Also, the step from the B2 exam to the C1 exam is then not as great.

If the studies are in English, a TOEFL or IELTS exam must be passed.

The cost of living in Germany, is about 950 € – 1000 € per month which is lower than in other industrialized countries. 

Foreign students with a student visa are allowed to work up to 140 days full time or 280 days part time per year. Students with “geringfügige Beschäftigung” (mini-jobs), which pay maximum 520 Euros per month, can work all year round.

In addition, there is the possibility to apply for a scholarship from the university itself or from other organizations (political, religious, etc.). However, there are very few such scholarships available.

You can apply directly to the university at which you want to study. In addition, 170 universities work with Uni-Assist, where you can apply directly at  www.uni-assist.de.

The following documents are required in order to apply for a student visa at the German Embassy in Yangon:

• letter of acceptance from a German university
• proof of financing to cover the cost of studies and establishing a blocked account in Germany in the amount of of 11.208 €. This is equivalent to the cost of living for one year. Alternative for this is confirmation of a scholarship.
• Proof of the language skills in the language of instruction for the study course or the preparatory course (without a preparatory language course as a rule at least B2 in the language of instruction)
• German health insurance for students

After you graduate in Germany, you can apply for a residence permit for job search for up to 18 months while you are looking for work. Once you have found a job, your residence permit can be amended to include a working permit, if all the other requirements are fulfilled. You will not need to leave the country and apply for a new visa first.
