The multidisciplinary artistic project Faufilés discusses the exhibition of objects and “human zoos” as well as issues of restitution and decolonization. The project brings together artists and scholars from Burkina Faso, France, and Germany; it is based on field research, research discussion and artistic processes and makes participants consider the topic from different perspectives. The project focuses on how functions and aims of existing museums can be conceived and transformed, in order to create new spaces which can bring about new relations between objects and audience. Part of this endeavor is to decolonize the gaze with the following question in mind: how can we see the other without being stuck in structures of power which turn the other into the stranger? Reflections, discussions, and artistic research lead to a multidisciplinary production which unites theatre, writing, research, dance, fine arts, and museology, in order to reconfigure our practices of exhibition and perception.
